Since the sold-out season of this gripping musical by Joanna Weinberg at Emanuel Synagogue, we have been fielding requests to make it available for streaming and we have heard your cries. Gather the family around and experience the magic for yourself.
Beatrice Nasi, who would come to be known as Gracia Nasi Mendes, one of the richest women in the world, was born in 1510 in Portugal, where her forcibly-baptized, Crypto Jewish family fled from the nearby Spanish Inquisition. She worked to find a safe place for Jews, setting up an underground network to help Jews leave Portugal, including the Nasi family who lived in Venice, Ferrara, and finally Constantinople, where Doña Gracia assumed a role of leadership in the Sephardi world of the Ottoman Empire.
Joanna Weinberg is an actor, writer and composer with 14 original one-woman shows to her name including the critically acclaimed Pandora’s Bag, Piano Diaries, Twelve Shoes, Bianka's Bloodsongs, and Sinksongs - the inspiration for her internationally released feature film Goddess. Her award-winning musical Lifeforce won the Sydney Fringe Best Production award in 2013 and her soccer parent musical Every Single Saturday played in multiple Sydney theatres before touring NSW in 2011. Joanna runs song-writing workshops, directs choirs and has performed with different bands at the Vanguard, the Sound Lounge, Camelot Lounge, the Butterfly Club, the Hayes Theatre and many more.
